A Testament to Tenacity & Artistic Growth with NMA Alumni, Andres Cabanos

As a distinguished alumnus of New Masters Academy (NMA), Andres Cabano's journey underscores the immense potential unleashed through digital art instruction. In our forthcoming interview, Andres delves deep, explaining how NMA has been instrumental in helping him realize his artistic potential.

Hello, Andres! We are so honored to host our very first NMA Alumni interview with you. Can you please tell us about your art? What type of art do you create, and who are some of your favorite artists?

I've always enjoyed sketching and painting, especially the figure and portraiture. I am interested in art that falls somewhere between realistic representational art and Impressionism. My greatest inspiration has shifted throughout the years, but I admire the works of great Alla prima painters such as Joaquin Sorolla, John Singer Sargent, and many more.

What made you choose to study with New Masters Academy over other institutions?

I chose New Masters Academy for my art education because it is affordable, and, more importantly, the caliber of instructors is excellent, and the roster is constantly growing, which is impressive. Also, the way the courses are put together has been highly beneficial. Based on my experience, I can easily navigate the site and find just the proper instructions. My learning experience with NMA has been consistent, not because of my abilities, but because of the abundant art instruction and clear paths that help guide me along the way.

What advice would you give to current NMA students?

I would advise current NMA students to rely on their talents; often, we get bogged down by academic instruction, which is necessary but not entirely the means of creating art. Much of what surprises us is when we are at play. I would stick to what you love most and own it!

Which courses or instructors at the academy had the most profound impact on your artistic growth?

The foundational courses significantly influenced my learning since they were practical and applicable to how I worked. These courses, which concentrated primarily on proportions, construction, and color theory, were the most beneficial to me. Glenn Vilppu, Steve Huston, and Karl Gnass were the instructors who had the most influence on my work. They were terrific professors who discussed the principles in depth, and I always find myself returning to the fundamentals due to these educators.

What techniques or styles did you find most enriching to study and why?

The cross-hatching technique was the most significant benefit because it allowed me to explore the forms more closely and carefully.

How did critiques and feedback at New Masters Academy shape your growth as an artist?

The critiques and feedback were crucial and beneficial, and I learned the most from my classmates and peers. Because New Masters Academy has such a large internet following, getting feedback is relatively straightforward. The online community creates an inviting and enjoyable place for people of all levels to share and learn from one another.
